Richard Haywood Maddux of Madison, Mississippi, 66, died November 15, 2014
Born in Columbia, TN, he was a son of the late James Nelson and Geraldine Pharris Maddux. He was raised in Athens, GA and was a longtime resident of Greensboro, GA. Mr. Maddux graduated from Athens High School and the University of Georgia. Following graduation, he served his country with the U.S. Army Reserves. He had a distinguished banking career with BankSouth in Greensboro, GA as Executive Vice President, retiring following 25 years of service and continued serving on the board. During this time he pioneered lending around Lake Oconee, which assisted in the development of numerous lake communities. Mr. Maddux played an integral role in the development of the HOPE scholarship. From 1991-2003 by the appointment of Governor Zell Miller, he served as Chairman of the Georgia Student Finance Commission which was charged with administering the HOPE Scholarship.
An avid and passionate fisherman, he knew every stump, ridge, and rock in Lake Oconee. For the past 30 years he would travel to Alaska and Canada to enjoy summer time fishing. In winter months, he enjoyed sport fishing off the coast of Costa Rica.
Survivors include his wife, Nell Parker Maddux; sons, Bretton Dobbs Maddux and his wife, Jessica Berry Maddux of Watkinsville, and Brenton Jared Maddux and his wife, Jennifer Webb Maddux of Cumming; grandchildren, Bennett Haywood Maddux, Kennedy Frances Maddux, and Lauren Amelia Maddux; brother, Hugh Nelson Maddux and his wife, Lynne Dudley Maddux of Newnan and niece, Kelly Maddux Hines and her husband, James Harris Hines.
Funeral services will be held 11AM, Friday, November 21, 2014 at Lord and Stephens Chapel, West with Rev. Scott Bartholomew officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
Honorary pallbearers will be Rick Northen, Brian Orr, Steve Pierce, Rodney McCart, Bobby Reynolds, Heath Edwards
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
