Richard Strother Gaines, Jr., "Knocker" 89, died Saturday, April 03, 2010 at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 2PM at Lord & Stephens East Chapel with Rev. Al Davis officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be held at a later date at Concord Methodist Church Cemetery, Elberton, GA.
Born and raised in the Dewey Rose Community of Elbert County, GA he was the son of Richard Strother and Estelle Cochran Gaines. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Kathleen Evanson and Ann Lillian Adams, Elberton, GA and Martha G. Rice, Athens, GA. Mr. Gaines was an automotive mechanic and an avid gardener and fisherman. He served his country in the US Army during WWII and was a member of Concord Methodist Church, Elberton.
He is survived by children: Mary G. Jones (Jarrell) Hull, GA and Richard S. Gaines, III (Vicki) Woodstock, GA; grandchildren: Chris Herring (Rhonda) and Pam Goodman (Joe), Watkinsville, GA; Thomas Gaines (Courtney) Cumming, GA; Heather Kolodin (Adam) and Richard "Richie" S. Gaines IV (Ashley), Canton, GA; great-grandchildren: Jimmy Davis, Kaitlyn Goodman, Andrew and Brett Herring, Watkinsville, GA; Alexis and Peyton Gaines, Cumming, GA.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Concord Methodist Church Building Fund in his honor.
