Richard Clarence Burger, 81, passed away at home surrounded by his beloved family on June 14, 2024.
Richard worked thirty-four years at Anaconda Wire & Cable (AKA General Cable) as Supervisory Positions and Shipping Manager. After retiring, he drove a school bus for Oconee County for eleven years. He loved those children and their parents.
Richard loved sports. He played baseball at Oconee High School and continued playing slow-pitch softball until he was 71. He loved taking his wife and grandchildren and nephews to tournaments in the Southeastern states. His team won five National Championships. He won All-World First Baseman in two Nationals in Chicago and was the Most Valuable Offensive Player. He also loved camping and fishing with family and friends.
Richard was a beloved husband of forty-four years to his wife, Diane Self Burger. He is survived by two children, Tracy (Barry) Smith and Richey (Tonya) Burger; two brothers, Alton “Pete” Burger and Danny Burger; two granddaughters, Cassidy (Nick) Walshe and Madison (Judd) Stratton; three great grandsons and several nieces and nephews, including two very special nephews, Hunter and Will Bernard. Also surviving are his dear brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Sam and Melinda Bernard. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Harrell and Frances Burger and two brothers, Hinton Burger and Jerry Burger.
The family would like to thank the team members of Bridgeway Hospice for all the comfort they provided to Richard and his family.
A Celebration of Life will be Saturday, June 29, 2024 from 1:00 until 4:00PM at Thomas Cotton Gin.
