Rev. Lee Hunter, 71, died October 11, 2020.
Born in Wilkes County and raised in Crawfordville until age 12 when he moved to Hard Labor Creek State Park in Rutledge, Lee was a son of the late Harold Lee Hunter, Sr. and Elizabeth Anne Dickinson Hunter.
“Mr. Lee” as he was called by so many, was a true lifelong follower of Christ. During his lifetime, he served many Baptist churches in Georgia beginning at the age of 17. Among those were Appalache, Mt. Tabor, High Shoals, Pendergrass, Kingtown, West End, Union, Powelton, Blacks Creek, Arnoldsville, Apple Valley, Academy, Edwards Chapel, and Pleasant Grove, where he continued to serve. He served full time at the University of Georgia Baptist Collegiate Ministries from 1994 until 2010 when he retired however continued to work there part time until just recently and served with the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home for 3 years.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 50 years, Dianne Hunter; daughter, Rhonda (Matt) Sorrow of Arnoldsville; grandsons, Thomas Sorrow (fiancé, Kendall Harris) and Eli Sorrow; sister, Marie McElhannon; nephew, Alan McElhannon; niece, Allison Chick; great nephews, Dakota and John John; Brother in law, Joey Johnston and other extended family members. He was proceeded in death by his brother, Billy Hunter; sister, Lynn Johnston and brother-in-law, Warren McElhannon.
Lee enjoyed fishing, woodworking, spending time with his family, mission trips, preaching and cooking. His world famous poppyseed chicken and broccoli casserole have been the delight of thousands over the years as he cooked for students at the UGA BSU/BCM and Dinner Theater Missions fundraisers.
The family will receive friends at Lord and Stephens, WEST, Watkinsville, Friday, October 16, 2020 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. Services will follow in the chapel Saturday, October 17, 2020 at 2:00 PM with Pastors Franklin Scott and Ray Finger officiating. Interment will be at Bogart 1st Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Joe Graham, Patrick Smith, Kent Huff, Robby Duvall, Greg Wheeler, and Steven John.
