Edward Glen Holt
(May 21, 1932 - January 7, 2015)
Watkinsville, Georgia - Rev. Dr. Edward Glen Holt, 82, died on January 7, 2015. Glen was the sixth of eight children born to David Milton Holt and Anna Mildred Powell Holt. Glen graduated from Mars Hill Junior College in 1952, Wake Forest College in 1954 and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1958.
Glen served North Carolina Baptist churches throughout his career. He was ordained in 1955 at Pisgah Baptist Church in Smithfield. He served as pastor of Sardis Baptist Church in Smithfield, Hephzibah Baptist Church in Princeton, Grassy Creek Baptist Church in Granville County, First Baptist Church of Hillsborough, First Baptist Church of Mount Olive and First Baptist Church of Fayetteville, where he also served as Pastor Emeritus after his retirement.
From 1991 to 1993, Glen served as President of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, having previously served three terms as President of the convention's General Board. Glen served on the Board of Trustees of Campbell University, the Board of Directors of Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute and as President of the Ministerial Alumni Association of Wake Forest University.
Glen preached abroad on mission trips to Jamaica and the Ukraine. He participated in advanced divinity studies at Yale Divinity School and Princeton Theological Seminary. Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC awarded Glen an honorary Doctorate of Divinity in 1993.
In his later years, Glen courageously and humbly faced the challenges of Parkinson's Disease. During this time, Glen and his wife, Joyce, moved to Raleigh, North Carolina and Watkinsville, Georgia to be near their children and grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the many caregivers from Athens Heritage Home and Oconee Area Home Care for their tremendous love, care and support of Glen and his family during this time.
Glen is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joyce Smith Holt, a native of Selma, North Carolina who currently lives in Watkinsville, Georgia. He also is survived by son, Mark Holt, and his wife, Joanna, of Raleigh, NC and their children, Charles Holt, Sarah Holt, Grace Wells and Caroline Wells and by daughter, Amy Holt Neill, and her husband, Mike, of Watkinsville and their children, Christopher Neill and Carrie Neill.
Four of Glen's siblings predeceased him: David Holt, Jr., Lorene Holt Wiggins, Robert Holt and Rexford Holt. Glen is survived by three of his siblings: Doris Holt Wallace of Chester, VA, Nellie Jean Holt Woodruff of Smithfield, NC and Walter Holt of Four Oaks, NC.
A service honoring the life of Rev. Dr. Holt will be held at Oconee Presbyterian Church in Watkinsville on Monday, January 19, at 1:00 pm, with visitation following the service. A service will be held at First Baptist Church of Fayetteville, NC at a later date.
