Reta Evans Brown

d. March 12, 2010

Reta Evans Brown of Athens died quietly on Friday, March 12, 2010, a few hours after celebrating her 89th birthday. A native of Fitzgerald, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late James Andrew Evans and Annie Ruby (Johnie) Johnson. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Wedford Brown in 2003, after 60 years of marriage.
She attended the University of Georgia before becoming the bride of her soldier husband during WWII. After the war she opened "Reta Brown's Dance Studio" and taught tap and ballroom dancing to many students--first in south Georgia and later in Gainesville, Ga. She was a long time active member of the Athens First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She loved her family and took great pride in being a homemaker. Her sense of humor and the "twinkle in her eye" were endearing to all who knew her.
Survivors include daughter, Carole Langley, and her husband, Emmett; daughter, Susan Whitehead; granddaughter, Alicia Langley Lewis and her husband, Riggs; granddaughter, Beth Langley; great grandchildren, Grant and Eliza Lewis and her much loved caregiver, affectionately referred to as a granddaughter, Kameko Browner.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the administrators and many staff members at The Plaza Personal Care Center at Talmage Terrace for the excellent care that was provided to this mother and her daughters.
Services will be held graveside at Oconee Hill Cemetery on Sunday, March 14, 2010, at 2:00 p. m. with Rev. Grady Wigley officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charitable organization of choice.
Lord and Stephens, EAST, is in charge of arrangements.
