Raymond Woller passed away at Piedmont Hospital on Saturday November 30, 2024. The cause of death was pneumonia. He was 83 years old. He is survived by his wife Doris Kadish, stepsons Matthew (Barbara) and Eugene (Carol), stepdaughter Rachel (Jim), and grandchildren Lucas, Melissa, and Zachary. A kind, gentle soul, he will be sorely missed and will live on forever in the memories of his family and friends.
Raymond was born an only child May 19, 1941 in Union, New Jersey to German immigrant parents. German was his first language, and he maintained ties with relatives in Germany (in German) almost to the end. He graduated high school as valedictorian in 1959. Majoring in Philosophy, he received a B.A. degree from Brown University and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He taught Philosophy at Kent State University and the University of Georgia. A competitive swimmer, he gained top spots regionally and nationally for his age group.
Suffering from aphasia in the last decade of his life, Raymond lost the love of language that had defined him. He relished intellectual discussion and debate. He was a devoted and animated teacher. In addition to Introduction to Philosophy, he taught Symbolic Logic, Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, and seminars on British Empiricism and John Locke.
A Celebration of Life reception will be held at Presbyterian Village Athens at 12:00 on Saturday December 28.
