Ray N. Hemphill, 87, of Colbert, Georgia, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2024, after a brief illness. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Ray lived a full and meaningful life rooted in service, family, and community.
Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Ray graduated from Mississippi College in 1960. He began his career at the University of Mississippi Medical Center before relocating to Athens, Georgia, in 1967 to join the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), where he dedicated 30 years of service before retiring in 1998.
Ray’s life was filled with simple joys. He had a deep love for the outdoors, flyfishing in the Soquee River, camping, motorcycling, and the peaceful pastime of mowing grass. His work ethic and passion for nature were ever-present in the way he lived.
In addition to his career, Ray was deeply committed to his community. He served with the Beaverdam Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years, embodying the spirit of service and always being there to lend a helping hand. A man of service in many ways, Ray was also active in ROTC during high school and served in the National Guard for eight years.
Ray is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Nell, whose unwavering companionship and love were the foundation of his life. He leaves behind his children, Wendy Bond (Bobby) and Chris Hemphill (Tana), as well as three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
