Danielsville - Randy Lane McElroy, 62, died Thursday, April 12, 2012.
Born in Athens, raised in Madison County, he is the son of Mary Gloria McElroy and the late Charles Asa McElroy. Randy graduated from Madison County High School. He then received a Bachelors in Political Science from the University of Georgia and a Masters in Systems Management from the University of Southern California.
Randy specifically stated he was "very proud to have served his Country." He spent 20 years as a Air Force Officer, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a Radar Navigator/Bombardier on the B-52. He served in Operation: Desert Storm and received multiple Medals and Ribbons, his highest honor being the Meritorious Service Medal.
After Retirement, Randy continued to serve Veterans, holding many offices within the local Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He supported many high school and college ROTC units, preapring the next generation of Military Officers.
Preceded in Death by step mother: Lottie Williams McElroy.
Survivors include his Loving Wife of 41 years, Louise Faulkner McElroy, son: Travis McElroy; brother: Clay (Avis) McElroy; sisters: Inya (Butch) Russell, Vickie (John) Eubanks; step brother: David (Neta) Hix; step sister: Wanda (Larry) Horne.
The family will receive friends today, Saturday April 14, 6-8PM at the Lord & Stephens Funeral Home in Danielsville.
Funeral services will be held, Sunday, 3PM at Moon's Grove Baptist Church, where Randy is a member, with Rev. Tom Dial officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations in Randy's name may be made to the American Cancer Society (1684 Barnett Shoals Rd, Athens, GA 30605) or to VFW Post 2872 in Athens.
