Athens - Ralph Edward "Turtle" Smith, Jr., 52, died Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Born in Athens, he was preceded in death by his mother Carolyn Dillard Smith Eaton and sister a Susan Claire Rousseau. Edward, at a young age developed a love of cars and motorcycles. He drove his racing BMW at Road Atlanta in the 80's and was very proud of his sport and winnings. He opened a business in downtown Athens, Bavarian Restorations so he could work with his love of BMW's. Edward was an animal lover and cherished his dogs. He had no children of his own but found joy in his young nieces and later in his grand nephews.
He was survived by his father Dr. Ralph E. Smith Sr., sister Ellen Duttweiler (Bill Raines), nieces Carolyn Mitchell (Steve), Sarah Duttweiler, Laura Benz (Ryan), 5 great nephews & an aunt Clara Murray of Gainesville
The family will have a memorial gathering and receive friends at the residence of his sister, Ellen, Friday, May 21, 2010 from 4 to 7PM.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Madison-Oglethorpe Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 453, Danielsville, GA 30677.
