Athens - R. Russell Bruce, 83, died May 11, 2009.
A native of Jasper, Ontario, Canada, Dr. Bruce was the son of the late Robert and Winifred Bruce. He was preceded in death by a brother, Douglas Bruce.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Barbara (Donnie) Bruce; son, Robert Donald Bruce (Linda) of Comer; granddaughters, Shelby Bruce of Comer and Michelle Bruce of Colbert; brother, Alvan Bruce, and sisters, Beryl Boothe and Illean Wieder, all of Ontario, Canada.
Dr. Bruce was a professor at Mississippi State University prior to moving to Athens in 1965. He was a soil physicist at the USDA Center in Watkinsville until his retirement in 1995. He was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2009, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1065 Gaines School Road, at 3 p.m. The Reverends Mark Harper and Beecher Mathes will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church or the Alzheimer's Association , 1925 Century Blvd., Suite 10, Atlanta, GA 30345-3315.
