Phyllis Clay Steinbeck passed away peacefully on January 3, 2023 after a brief illness. Her children were by her side when she passed.
Born in Savannah, GA on December 15, 1939, Phyllis was the daughter of Hunter McGuire Clay and Eleanor Curtis Clay. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Dr. Klaus Steinbeck. She is survived by her sister Eleanor C. Yeager (Robert) of Dallas, Texas.
Phyllis will be remembered for many things. One was her firm belief in education. She believed education was the key to a better life and helped many to achieve their dream. She was extremely proud of being a stay-at-home mom. As her children were growing up, she provided support during their formative years, only going to work after they had all either completed school or begun school in the Oconee County School System. She spent many years as a paraprofessional in the primary school and enjoyed mentoring children as well.
Phyllis will also be remembered for her kind and gentle spirit. She always had a smile on her face. She was willing to help anyone who needed a helping hand. Phyllis had a kind heart and word of encouragement for everyone. Her presence will be missed by all that knew her.
She is survived by her children, Rika Schoenke and husband Art, and her children, Michael and Brad; Susan Tate and husband Rob, and her sons Austin, Justin, and Ford Hatcher; Katie Cartwright and children Katrina, Hunter, and Kala and Karl Steinbeck and wife Julie, and children Emily and Hunter McGuire, and numerous great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 13, 2023 at Lord and Stephens West Chapel from 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held at Lord and Stephens West Chapel, January 14, 2023 at 1pm. Mrs. Steinbeck will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Klaus at Evergreen Memorial Park.
