Philip H. Pollock, Jr., 91, of 159 S. Stratford Drive, Athens, died Friday, August 21, 2015. Born in Joliet, Illinois on October 10, 1923, he had his childhood and adolescence in Minnesota, North Dakota and western Montana. He is preceded in death by his wife, Rhoda Hoverson Pollock. Survivors include his two children, Ann R. Myers of St. Augustine, FL and Philip H. Pollock III of Orlando, FL, and two grandchildren, Theron B. Moore III of St Augustine and Lauren Decara Pollock Vagelakos of Gainesville, FL.
Mr. Pollock was an infantry combat veteran of the European theater in World War II. After his discharge in 1945, he earned undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Iowa in political science and history. His professional experience included secondary school teaching in Iowa and Montana, fourteen years in the Air Force historical program, and nearly twenty years as Assistant to the Director at UGA's Vinson Institute of Government. Since his retirement in 1987, he has been active in community activities including the Athens Clarke Public Library, the Athens Symphony board, the Ark United Ministry Outreach Center and St. Gregory the Great Episcopal Church. For five years Mr. Pollock chaired the board of the Drayton Square Condominium Association. He had a lifelong interest in aviation, aviation history and held a private pilot license. Mr. Pollock also enjoyed cars and automotive travel. He was a classical music fan. Mr. Pollock was a loving, generous man who will be missed by many.
