Pauline Ruth Hoeven Marshall, 92, passed away on Monday, May 2, 2022 at Highland Hills Memory Care in Watkinsville, GA.
She was born on May 23, 1929 to Charles and Velma Hoeven in Alton, Iowa. Pauline attended Alton High School where she participated in extracurricular activities as a cheerleader and music, playing the saxophone. She then attended Stephen’s College in Columbia, MO where she earned a 2-year degree in education. She was then accepted to Drake University in Des Moines, IA and completed her Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education.
While attending Drake she met a young law student, Stanley J. Marshall, and they were married on July 14, 1951. The US Navy recalled Stanley for the Korean War. During that time Paula Frances (1952) was born in LeMars, IA. When Stanley returned they resided in Des Moines, IA and Gerrit Stanley (1955) was born. In 1959 the family moved to Ackley, Iowa where Stan established a law practice and Pauline taught for 33 years in the Ackley-Geneva school district.
Pauline was a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ackley, serving as Elder, Sunday school teacher, choir member, the Presbyterian Women, greeter and member of the flower and kitchen committee.
At Drake she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, Chapter Gamma Epsilon. In Ackley, she was the Legion Auxiliary Poppy Chair for 25+ years, Etna Township Republican Chairwoman, Eastern Star, and BN Chapter of PEO.
She had a full, active, caring life and always tried to look for that which was good. Her motto was, “Just take one day at a time and do the best you can.” Her faith in God is what kept her moving forward all her life. She will be greatly missed for her smiles, sense of humor, and gentle, caring spirit.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Stanley J Marshall, Cmdr. USN, in 2013.
Pauline is survived by her brother Charles (Helen) Hoeven of Louisburg, KS; daughter Paula (Richard) Marshall Zimdars, Athens, GA; son Gerrit (Sharon) Marshall, Madison, WI; grandchildren: Katherine (Ben) Kartman, Stoughton, WI; Jonathon (Jennifer Sutton) Marshall, Golden Valley, MN; Andrew Zimdars, Athens, GA and Eric (Soliz Mayer) Zimdars of Seattle, WA; 2 nieces, 1 nephew, and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, in Ackley, IA and burial at the Nassau Township Cemetery in Alton, IA. Dates to be announced.
