Patsy “Joan” Nunnally, 84, of Athens, GA died July 23, 2023. Joan was the daughter of the late Florrie Brown & Duard S. Nunnally Sr. A native Athenian, Joan was a loyal and dedicated bookkeeper and administrative assistant having worked for G. Fain Slaughter Sr., William N. “Billy” Slaughter, and G. Fain Slaughter Jr. and their various businesses for 55 years until her retirement in 2008.
Aside from her parents, Joan was proceeded in death by her sister Jane Schuss (Gus, living), her cousin Billy Nunnally (Linda), and her beloved dog, Scrapper.
Joan is survived by her brother Butch Nunnally (Marilyn), her sister Betty Millender, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Joan enjoyed a simple life. She had great pride in being a natural Athenian. Joan enjoyed cooking and entertaining. While her specialty was traditional southern soul food, she was not intimidated by the challenge of trying her hand at a recipe that a friend or relative endorsed or requested. Even when there were no guests to cook for, she would still cook a smörgåsbord for herself and Scrapper, then package “doggy” bags for her friends and family to indulge in later. Joan was a believer in fresh food; thus, she enjoyed gardening and fishing, and in her later years would often trade cooked dishes in return for fresh produce and fish. She was proud to support many of the “farm to table” style restaurants in Athens when she was not up to cooking.
She was an ardent supporter of all University of Georgia Athletics, and her beloved Atlanta braves (even through the rough years). The last few years of achievements for the Braves and UGA Football brought great joy to Joan, and she would get a glistening in her eye bragging to anybody about Kirby Smart’s coaching success and the prodigal son coming home. Her favorite players were Nick Chubb, Sony Michel, and Stetson Bennett IV because, “…they did what Hershel Walker should have done… they finished the drill.”
