Otha Lanier Nelms, a pillar of strength, integrity, wisdom and compassion, peacefully departed from this life at home at the age of 92. He leaves behind a legacy that will endure through generations. His journey was marked by unwavering dedication to faith, service, and family.
Lanier was born in Comer, Georgia on May 3, 1932, to George and Jessie Lee Nelms. He grew up in a large family with many siblings and within walking distance of Meadow Baptist Church, where he met the love of his life, Frances Cornelia David. They were married in 1948.
He began his career with Georgia Power Company and quickly progressed through roles with increasing responsibility over the course of his 40 years with the company. He retired in 1989 as Local Manager in Duluth, Georgia.
Lanier was always active in his community and church. He enjoyed being outdoors, playing golf, and was an avid Georgia Bulldogs fan. He served as Deacon in the First Baptist Church in Duluth, where he also taught Sunday School and was a Boy Scouts leader. He was a member of Gwinnett County Chamber of Commerce, a Melvin Jones Fellow in Duluth Lions Club, a charter member of Duluth Clean & Beautiful, and served on the Duluth Planning and Zoning Board. He brought joy to many and made sure everyone felt important and loved.
Yet amidst his devotion to his career and his community, Lanier held his family closest to his heart. He is survived by his beloved wife of 75 years, Frances Nelms, and their two daughters Sharon Walker (Dorsey) and Susan Nelms (Jerry). As a grandfather (Papa) to Jason Walker (Nikki); Kelli Browning (Lamont); Jennifer Walker; Mandi Spitler (Michael), he gave unconditional love and cherished every moment he spent with them. In addition, he has eight great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly: Wesley, Ansley, Samuel, Sydney, Samantha, Averee, Shelby and Paisley.
Lanier’s memory will live on forever in the hearts of those fortunate enough to know him. His love and legacy will continue to guide and inspire us through life.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2024 at 3:00 PM with interment to follow at Meadow Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
