Athens - Norman Edward Walker, 52, beloved husband, father, son, brother, and devoted friend died Friday, August 19, 2011.
He was born in Atlanta on March 31, 1959, and graduated from Lakeside High School, where he enjoyed sports. He was co-captain of the football team and also played baseball. He continued playing baseball while attending Mercer University.
Norman fulfilled his lifelong dream of a career in law enforcement and recently retired from the DeKalb County Police Department after 30 years of service. In his retirement, Norm enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and gardening.
He fought a courageous battle against ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease"). He had an extraordinary sense of humor that helped his family and friends live with his disease, and it served him well for his many years of police service.
Norman was preceded in death by his mother, Norma Haasl Walker. He is survived by his wife, Robin Jones-Walker; children, William Edward Walker and Kathryn Jones; father, Dr. W.W. Walker, and second mother, Jacqueline Irwin Walker. He was the youngest of four brothers who shared a close bond: Charles Walker (Mery), Bill Walker (Anne), and Wayne Walker (Diane). He is also survived by nephew, Tony Walker (Susan), and niece, Marie Walker.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, August 26, at the Lord & Stephens East Chapel, with Dekalb County Police Department Chaplain Reginald Carter officiating. Visitation will take place for one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Norman Walker Law Enforcement Scholarship Fund, Pinnacle Bank, 3140 Lexington Rd., Athens, GA 30605.
