Athens, GA - Nancy Griffin Bennett, age 76, passed away at home on Saturday, December 28, 2013. She was born on November 4, 1937 in Nashville, TN to the late Charles and Frances Griffin, and was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Bert Bennett, Jr.
Nancy was a graduate of West End High School, Nashville, TN and studied music at Carson Newman Baptist College in Jefferson City, TN and Howard Payne Baptist College in Brownwood, TX. She served as pianist and organist at churches in Nashville, TN, Golfwaithe, TX, and Athens, GA. Her family joined Beech Haven Baptist Church in 1970, where she enjoyed playing the piano for children's choirs and worship services. She also served as children's Sunday School teacher, worked at the N.E. Georgia Boy Scout Office, taught private piano lessons, sang in choirs and choral groups, and served as secretary for the Athens National Little League and treasurer of the Athens American Senior League. Additionally, she worked on a variety of committees at Beech Haven Baptist Church for many years and was a Cub Scout den mother, school room mother, and PTA board member. Of first importance to her were her Lord, her family, her church family, and her God-honoring music.
Survivors include her three sons, Thomas Gregory Bennett, Andrew Griffin Bennett, and Stephen Braswell Bennett; three daughters-in-law, Debra Owens Bennett, Trudy Hodges Bennett, and Elisabeth Walden Bennett; and five grandchildren, Thomas, Elizabeth, Nathan, Grayson, and Helen Bennett. Also surviving is a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Shirley Griffin, and a sister-in-law and her husband, Lucy Bennett Killen and Arnold Duncan Killen; and a number of special nieces and nephews.
The Bennett family wants to express their appreciation to Gentiva Hospice nurses and administrative personnel, caregivers Dianne Turner and Ruby Fleming, and many friends and neighbors.
A celebration service of her life will be held on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Beech Haven Baptist Church. Dr. Stewart B. Simms, Jr. and Rev. Ron Hatchett will officiate. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
Honorary pallbearers are current and former members of the Cornerstone Sunday School Class at Beech Haven Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at the Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, WEST, Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 pm.
