Myrtle Jo (Perry) Hughes

December 6, 1930 — April 19, 2016

Myrtle "Jo" Hughes, 85, of Watkinsville, Georgia passed away peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 19th, 2016 surrounded by her family.
A graveside service for family and friends will be held at Evergreen Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 23rd, 2016 followed by a reception at the home of Ormonde and Beth Mahoney. Jo was born in Ambrose, Georgia on December 6th, 1930. After several moves her family settled in Orlando, Florida, where she graduated from Orlando High School.
Jo was married to Charles R. Hughes Sr. on April 6th, 1953. They were married for fifty-three wonderful years. In 1992 she retired when she and Charles moved to Athens, where they would spend the remainder of their lives.
Her Christian faith foremost in her life, Jo was active in church wherever she lived, chiefly Fort Gatlin Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Orlando and Community Alliance Church in Athens. She also attended Athens First United Methodist Church with her family. She enjoyed gardening, baking, and was an accomplished seamstress and artist. Her favorite pastime was being with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Jo is survived by her sisters Jean Kelly, Patricia Sullivan; brother, John Perry, Jr.; son, Rev. Charles R. Hughes Jr. (Dale) and daughter Anne Elizabeth Mahoney (Ormonde); grandchildren Rev. Charles R. Hughes III, Samuel Hughes, Margaret Haden, Joseph Mahoney; step-grandchildren William Mahoney, Peggy Molyneux, Houston Mahoney; great-grandchildren, Oliver and Emily Hughes; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Jo is preceded in death by her parents John and Erdyce Perry; and her beloved husband, Charles.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Great Commission Fund of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, 8595 Explorer Drive, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80920. The family of Myrtle Jo Hughes wishes to thank the Gentiva Hospice and Visiting Angels for their help and support.
