Morris Shaffer, 175 Tara Place, Athens, died Monday, September 15, 2014 at the age of ninety one.
He was born December 2, 1922, the son of the late William Henry and Jessie Clyde Shaffer of Montgomery County, Mississippi. He is survived by his wife of sixty one years, Louise, a son, Thomas Michael Shaffer of Athens, and a sister, Ruth Shaffer of Kilmichael, Mississippi.
Mr. Shaffer was a World War II veteran, serving in the European Theatre. He resumed his college education after the war, graduating from the University of Florida in 1950. His professional career with Soil Conservation Service, USDA, began in 1952 in Mississippi. In 1965 he transferred to Athens and retired in 1980 as the State Soil Scientist of Georgia for Soil Conservation Service. Mr. Shaffer was an active member of St. James United Methodist Church for forty nine years, serving in numerous capacities during that time. He was an accomplished woodworker, artist and gardener. He crafted many pieces of fine furniture for family and friends, always sharing his talent with others. He will be remembered for his kind and generous spirit.
