Miriam G. Carpenter

Miriam Grace "Grandma" Carpenter of Hull, GA formally of Lima, Ohio and Bradenton, FL began her dance on streets of gold Thursday, September 4 at 4:15 pm. Whether it was her stories, smile, wit or passion for life we have all been BLESSED to celebrate almost 98 years with one of the most special and stately ladies on the planet. She was born November 15, 1915 to C. Obe Holmes and Grace Fetter Holmes. She was preceded in death by her husband James M. Carpenter Sr., brother Burdette Holmes, and sister Helen Frobase. Surviving family includes a son, James M. Carpenter Jr. (Deloris) of Palmetto, FL, grandson James M. Carpenter III (Lisa) of Hull, GA, granddaughter Miriam L. Carpenter of Bradenton, FL, and five beloved great-grandchildren Shalin, MacLean, Matthias, Micah, and Mackenzie. Miriam was a 1937 graduate of Lima Memorial Nursing School serving her country in WW2 as an army nurse in Fort Knox, Kentucky. In 1956, the family established Telephone Answering Service and Carpenter Radio Company where she diligently worked until her retirement. In the 60s Miriam also developed the Lima Bureau of Nursing Service where she contracted private duty nurses. Upon retirement to Florida, Miriam worked at Senior Staff agency and when she moved to Georgia at age 85 she volunteered 10,000+ hours at Compass Church. Miriam was a 33 year breast cancer survivor as well as a member of several professional organizations over the years - The Elks, Registered Nurses Association, and Association of Answering Services. Miriam was a member of Market Street Presbyterian Church in Lima, Ohio, Bee Ridge Presbyterian Church in Sarasota, FL, and Compass Church in Athens, Georgia. Miriam was a gentle, grateful spirit full of life, charm and knowledge. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her. "Thank God who gives us VICTORY over sin and death through Jesus Christ our Lord." Visitation will be Sunday, September 8th, beginning at 5:00 pm at Lord and Stephens East in Athens, GA followed by a Celebration Service of her life at6:00 pm. In Lieu of flowers, Miriam requested donations be made to Compass Church - 234 Old Epps Bridge Rd, Athens, GA 30606 or online at www.compasschurch.com. Lord & Stephens East is in charge of arrangements.
