Demorest, GA - Mary (Mimi) Moreland Smith, age 77 of Demorest, GA , passed away Monday, December 15, 2008.
She was born on August 2, 1931 in Porto Alegre, Brazil to the late J. Earl Moreland and Helen Hardy Moreland. She grew up in Ashland, VA and attended Randolph Macon Women's College, graduating in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in music. She received an education degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and later went on to earn a masters in education from Georgia State in Atlanta .
She moved to Atlanta in the late 1950s and began teaching at Southwest High School . She met and married Thomas Ellison Smith on September 24, 1960. She began teaching at Holy Innocents Episcopal School in 1966 and retired from there in 1991 moving to Demorest , GA.
She is survived by her husband, her daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and Robert Sinyard of Athens; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jane and Ben Branscomb of Birmingham, AL, Helen and Clare Cotton of Boston, Mass, and Frances and Bud Johns of San Francisco, CA; grandchildren Trey, Blake and Elizabeth Sinyard and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at Grace Calvary Episcopal Church in Clarkesville on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 2pm.
