Millicent Vaughan Norton

Millicent Vaughan Norton, 85, died peacefully on Sunday, August 10, 2014, in Phoenix, Arizona, with family members by her side. She was born May 30, 1929, in Bartow County, Georgia, the eldest child of Mae Morris and Theodore L. Vaughan, Sr. The family relocated to Oconee County when Millicent was a young teen, and except for a brief time, she remained in Watkinsville until an illness caused her to move to Phoenix, Arizona, in 2011.
Millicent married Blanton F. Norton of Watkinsville on July 17, 1948. They raised their two daughters on Norton Road and later moved to Simonton Bridge Road. They were lifelong, active members of Watkinsville First Baptist Church. Millicent worked for 26 years as secretary at the Hardigree Insurance Agency. She later worked for ten years at Oconee Middle School, retiring at age 72.
After Blanton's passing in 1997, Millicent maintained a busy schedule that included her church and Sunday School activities, VFW Auxiliary, volunteering at the Oconee Senior Center, dance aerobics, and travel. To visit her children, she traveled to New York, Tennessee, Colorado, Louisiana, Missouri, and Arizona. She vacationed often with family and toured England, Ireland, and Scotland in 2007. Millicent was a "people person" who enjoyed new experiences, music, and laughing with friends and family.
Mrs. Norton is survived by her daughters Joyce Norton Pace and Kay Norton (husband Gary Hill) and grandchildren Lauren A. Pace, Jeremy N. Pace (wife Shanna Hudson Pace), Elizabeth V. Pace, Brandon Hill, and Charlie Norton-Hill. Her two great-grandsons are Jeremy Pace, Jr., and Bronson Pace. Several of Millicent's beloved nieces and nephews remain in Oconee and surrounding counties. Her sister-in-law, Mary Ward Vaughan, resides in Oglethorpe County.
Millicent was predeceased by her husband of forty-nine years, Blanton F. Norton, and the brothers who had been equally dear to her: T. L. Vaughan Jr., John A. Vaughan, Eugene Vaughan, and Clyde Vaughan.
To honor and celebrate Millicent's memory, a memorial service will take place at Watkinsville First Baptist Church at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 6, 2014.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the ASU Music Therapy Clinic, where Millicent spent many joyful hours after her move to Arizona.
