Watkinsville - Mildred Anita Whitehead Nixon, 97, passed away January 28, 2009 in Athens. A native of Watkinsville, she was a daughter of the late William Walker and Isabella Rix Whitehead, Sr. of Watkinsville.
She was a member of the Ashford Memorial Methodist Church, the earliest Cradle Roll member, placed in 1912 the year she was born.
She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin E. Nixon in 1988. She was also preceded in death by five siblings, Louisa Whitehead Lee, Edythe Whitehead Marshall, William Walker Whitehead, Asa Harold Whitehead, and Dorothy Whitehead Strickland, all of Watkinsville.
She graduated from the University of Georgia in 1933 and started teaching in Oconee County. In 1936 she moved to South Georgia and taught in public schools until she retired after 45 years. Then she and her husband moved to Jefferson, GA, his hometown.
She enjoyed painting as a hobby. After her husband's death, she returned to Watkinsville and became a regular member of the Morning Circle of the Ashford Church.
In 2002, she was honored by the Georgia Retired Teachers Association when she was granted Emeritus membership status.
She is survived by her sons, Dr. Daniel Walker (Gayle) Nixon of Charleston SC and Larry Scott Nixon of Albany, GA; grandsons Marvin Alan Nixon of Washington, DC and Lanny Nixon of Decatur, GA; one sister Adrienne O'Dillon of Watkinsville, and several nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Graveside services will be held at the Huff Cemetery in Watkinsville Monday, February 2 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Huff Cemetery fund (Pat Huff, P. O. Box 162, Watkinsville, GA, 30677).
