DECEMBER 29, 2022 — Michael Frederick Zornig passed away unexpectedly twenty-seven days after his 70th birthday. Born in Kyoto, Japan, Mike was the middle child of three siblings. He was an athlete who enjoyed the outdoors, was passionate about nature, and loved to travel. A number of these influences likely led him to move to Germany and Sweden during his undergraduate years. Over several years abroad, he worked and studied political philosophy before returning to the University of Georgia, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. Although Mike had strong academic interests, he spent the majority of his career as a builder, working alongside his father and brother Mark on numerous construction projects since he was a teenager.
Mike never knew a stranger. He lit up whenever he encountered someone new. Whether sharing a bench at the bus stop, crossing paths at a dog park, or frequenting his favorite Asheville natural spring, he would strike up a conversation. He loved listening to others’ stories and sharing his own experiences and perspectives.
Michael was preceded in death by his first son, Michael Paul Zornig, and his father, Harold Zornig. He is survived by his mother, Mary Zornig, and his three children: Katherine Zornig, Sean Zornig, and Ryan Zornig. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Zornig Andrews, and his brother, Mark Zornig. Finally, his Catahoula Leopard dog, Anna, mourns his passing.
Although Mike was taken too soon, he lived an extraordinary life surrounded by people who loved him. Instead of a traditional funeral, Mike’s family has organized a Celebration of Life on Friday, January 27, 2023 from 5-7 pm at Lord and Stephens East Chapel on Lexington Road in Athens, Georgia. At that time, the family will accept visitors. In lieu of flowers, the family will collect donations for his end-of-life expenses. If you would prefer to donate to a cause Mike believed in, please donate to the Sierra Club in his name.
