Michael James Myung, 31 years old, unexpectedly passed away Wednesday, June 12th, 2024, in his Oconee County home.
Michael had a heart of gold and never met a stranger. He was tough as nails, never complained about anything, but also had a very gentle side. Michael earned his Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout rank, along with his twin brother Steven, after they renovated the Oconee County Primary School’s playground together, just days before they both turned 18. Michael graduated from Oconee County High School in 2011 and then went on to earn a degree in Political Science, following in the footsteps of his father.
Michael’s upbeat attitude and love for his family was unmatched, especially when it came to helping others or making children laugh. At family gatherings, Michael could always be found playing with the children telling them jokes or being at the bottom of a dog pile. Michael’s infatuation with music was impressive and his latest favorite band was surely the topic of deep conversations for anyone nearby. One of Michael’s favorite groups was The Beatles, who inspired many of the songs Michael composed himself, and who instilled the desire for him to teach himself how to play the guitar, ukulele, and many other instruments. Michael had an extraordinary memory and could recite dates and details of family events, dates of countless album releases, or details of historical happenings with unbelievable precision. Michael loved the outdoors, family gatherings, and jumping into Lake Hartwell or the ocean even when it was cold outside just to get a laugh out of you.
Michael is loved and missed by many family members here in the US as well as in South Korea. Michael was proud of both his American and Korean heritage, as well as his testimony of and devotion to God and Jesus Christ. Michael’s ability to pray before meals at family gatherings was inspiring, his words would touch you right in the heart, the statements flowed like a beautiful song, and often times his impromptu prayers would make you want to open an eye during his prayer just to look at him because it would sound like God himself was speaking through Michael’s voice.
Michael was a lifelong resident of Athens, GA. Michael was a twin and the youngest of four boys.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Park Moon Myung.
Michael is survived by his ever-loving mother, Jeana Putnam Myung, and his three brothers Johnny, Danny, and twin Steven, all who miss him very much.
