Michael Webster Murray, cherished husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 8, 2024 at the age of 76.
Born in Athens, he was a son of the late Jewell Webster Murray and Margaret Dickens Murray. Mr. Murray was an Athens High graduate and was also an alumni of their baseball and football teams. He retired from the Athens Clarke County Fire Department as Fire Chief with more than 30 years of faithful service. He was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for hunting and fishing and he was also a dedicated NASCAR and Georgia Bulldogs fan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Gail Marie Garrison Murray and his sister, Nancy Lord Eades.
Survivors include his second wife, Ivy McEwen Murray; children, Tate Grizzle (Ashley), Ted Grizzle, Kirby Murray (Emily) and Allison Thompson (Wes); siblings, Diane Diletto, Dick Oldham and Rita Huff; grandchildren, Michael, Carly and Tess Murray, Holden and Sarah Ryan Grizzle and Hannah and Trip Thompson and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Monday, August 12, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Lord and Stephens, East. Interment will follow at Athens Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Michael Murray, Holden Grizzle, Tripp Thompson, Nathan Nelms, Tom Akins and Mark Tucker. The family will receive friends Sunday, August 11, 2024 from 4:00 until 6:00 pm at the funeral home.
