This world lost a true champion during the early hours of May 6, 2021. Michael Roy Meredith was not a star athlete, nor a celebrity, nor a politician, although he could have been any of those things had he set his heart and mind to it. He did not seek fame or recognition; instead, he worked passionately and diligently at whatever task was at hand. Mike believed that the most important things he did in life were to set an example for his two children, Jason and Amanda, and to serve as a consummate partner to his wife Judy. Their loss looms largest today, and our prayers are with them.
Mike was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on July 8, 1942, the son of Edgar Sawyer Chase Meredith and Ruth Ann (Neff) Meredith, both of whom preceded him in death. Among Ruth’s proudest moments were watching Mike grow as an accomplished musician and dancer – she was known to shake a leg herself – and ol’ Edgar’s proudest moment was watching him win the club championship at Oshkosh Country Club. After graduating from Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, Mike attended Duke University before graduating from the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh. After beginning a career in sales with Bergstrom Paper Company, Neenah, WI, Mike moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he served most of his 30-year career as world-wide sales manager for Ford Motor Company’s Glass Division. Yet the importance of his accomplishments paled in comparison to what grew to become his greatest passion and honor: lending a hand in building 60 homes alongside his Habitat for Humanity team.
One cannot think about Mike without being amazed at the wealth of friends he made along the way throughout his life. Whether it was his proficiency as an entertainer, his memory for details regarding the joys and cares of others, or his abiding faith, Mike had a knack for endearment – a talent that made loving him so much easier – and that makes losing him so much harder.
Mike is survived by his wife, Judy Hamman Meredith; his children, Jason Sawyer Meredith and Amanda Chase Meredith; his stepsons, Jack Jeffery Hall (Shanna), and Joel James Hall (Michelle), his grandchildren, Anna C. Meredith and Thomson C. Meredith; Judy’s grandchildren, Spencer C. Hall and Marshall G. Hall; the mother of Mike’s children, Juley Merwin Meredith; his siblings, Catherine Neff Brady, Charlotte Chase Meredith, Curry Chase Darlington, and Edgar Sawyer Chase Meredith, Jr.; two nieces and six nephews - all to whom he leaves his legacy of love.
The family will gather for an intimate memorial service. Donations in Mike’s memory may be made to the Greensboro FUMC, P.O. Box 216, Greensboro, GA 30642 or the Greene County Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 321, Greensboro, GA 30642.
