Athens - Mel Rodekohr, 93, of Athens, passed away Monday, November 24, 2008. He was born April 10, 1915 in Battle Creek, NE, to Louis and Augusta Rodekohr.
A Memorial Service will be celebrated on Friday, November 28, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Athens at 2 p.m.
Mel and Thelma were parents to four children -- Nancy Ann (Volk), Ruthann Marie of Lawrenceville, Janet Ilene of Bishop, and Donn Andrew of Auburn, AL. Melvin was preceded in death by his daughter Nancy (2000); and is survived by his wife Thelma, his three remaining children; four grand children; and three great grand children.
Mel and Thelma were married on November 25, 1937 in Staplehurst, NE. After their marriage they moved to a small farm west of Battle Creek where he farmed and worked for the AAA and the ASCS and continued to farm until 1965. Starting in 1965 until his retirement in 1980 he was a warehouse manager for Triple F Feeds. He also sold DeKalb Seed corn for many years. Mel was a musician who enjoyed playing the trumpet and singing in the choir.
Mel and Thelma retired to Athens, GA in 1987. They were active members in Trinity Lutheran Church where Melvin served as a Elder. They were founding members of the Elderberries seniors group. He became an avid golfer and traveler, having visited most of the U.S. States, several Canadian provinces, and several foreign countries. They particularly enjoyed cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the Memorial Fund at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2535 Jefferson Road, Athens, GA 30607.
