Max Charles Brown

Max Charles Brown died at his home in Athens, GA on August 19th, 2021, surrounded by family.

Max was born in Pavo, GA in 1940.  He grew up in Lumber City and told many wonderful stories about his youth in this small Georgia town.   Max spent many happy years in Lumber City with his parents Max and Mildred and his beloved sisters Marylyn and Marsha.

As a teenager, he worked in his father’s grocery store and had a strong work ethic.  He would spend afternoons working in the store and delivering groceries.

Lumber City was home to Max until he graduated high school.  He left soon after graduation to attend North Georgia College in Dahlonega.  Max transferred to Middle Georgia College for a short stint and then ended up at the University of Georgia where he earned his undergraduate degree and his Pharmacy degree.

In 1961, Max met his sweetheart, Memory, at her mailbox in Macon, GA.  He was in town with a friend and struck up a conversation and the rest is history.  They married in 1964 at Cross Keys Baptist Church in Macon.

In 1965, Max graduated from the University of Georgia and the newlyweds moved to Dublin.  They built a life, business and family there together.

Max first worked at Oatts Pharmacy, Davidson Pharmacy and Shamrock Pharmacy before opening his own business, Max Brown Pharmacy, in 1973.  It has been a thriving independent pharmacy for 48 years.

In 2011, Eisai Inc. and the Alzheimer's Association recognized Max as the recipient of the annual C.A.R.E Pharmacy award.  This award recognizes the extraordinary impact that pharmacists have on the lives of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and their families.

In 2015, Max was honored by the Georgia Pharmaceutical association for 50 years as a practicing pharmacist.

In 2016, Max had some health issues and had to retire.  He and Memory made the tough decision to leave Dublin after over 50 years.  Max needed additional care and they moved to Athens to be closer to family.

Max Charles Brown is survived by his wife of 56 years, Memory Brown of Athens, GA, and his children Leigh and Rodney Mays of Louisville, GA, and Chuck and Laura Brown, and also his grandsons, Max and Reese Brown of Watkinsville, GA.

Max is also survived by his sister Marylyn Johnson of Lumber City, GA and her family, and his sister Marsha Cauley and her husband Cary Cauley of Cordele, GA and their family, and his brother in law Bub Lister and his wife Jannie Lister of Jones County, GA and their family.

Max chose to be cremated and he will be buried in the family cemetery in Lumber City, GA this weekend next to his mother and father.  Immediate family will attend and lead the service where they will celebrate his life.

There will also be a dinner/celebration of life this weekend with his Max Brown Pharmacy family in Dublin.

Max Brown was a family man.  He showed great love and care for his family and friends and everyone that crossed his path.   His Max Brown Pharmacy family (including staff and customers) were very dear to his heart.

Max was humble, kind and giving.  He will be greatly missed but his legacy will live on forever.
