Mary Ann McClung Ware died April 19, 2014, She was born January 21, 1935 at Zenith, West Virginia, the youngest child of Herman O. McClung and Sadie Miller McClung. Her deceased siblings are Lucile McClung Dickson, Kathlene McClung Ferrell, and Omer Wendell McClung.
Mary Ann attended grade school and high school in rural Monroe County, WV, then West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV, where she graduated 1957 with a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics.
After marriage to Kenneth D. Ware of Webster Springs, WV in 1957 they lived one year in New Haven, CT where she taught at West Haven High School. They then lived in Philadelphia, PA, for three years and Ames, Iowa for ten years. Since 1971 they have lived at Deerfield Road, Bogart, GA. During a long and productive life, she traveled with her husband throughout the US and parts of Southern Africa, and lived for 6 months in New Zealand and two months in Australia.
Mary Ann was an enthusiastic and active lover of life, family, flowers and gardening, homemaking, ceramics and pottery making, sewing and quilting. She was a consummately skilled seamstress who designed and made clothing for herself and members of her family. She was also a gourmet cook and was sometimes called "Miss Betty Crocker" by her friends. She won awards for her African violets and orchids. Her interest in wildflowers is exemplified by the closeup color photographs she made of more than 200 kinds of wildflowers in the world famous Namaqualand of Southern Africa.
Mary Ann was a Charter member and founder of Cotton Patch Quilters Guild in the area of Athens, Georgia. This group not only makes quilts for their own home use and decoration, buy they also regularly have charitable projects working together to make quilts for shelters for battered women, for care facilities or the elderly, for hospitals and nursing homes, etc.
Mary Ann is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dr. Kenneth Ware, by her daughter Suzanne Ware McDonald (John) of Sarasota, FL, and two grandchildren, Alex and Chelsea, and by her son Dr. Greg Ware of Watkinsville, GA and three grandchildren; Leslie, Jake and Ben. Also surviving her are cousins Herbert Shires (Dorothy) and Violet Shires Dunbar of Zenith, WV, three nieces: Pat Bashen (Keith) and Kay Herrington (Bill) of Lewisburg, WV and Becky Dickson Eterno (John) of Texas and one nephew Edward Dickson of Tennessee.
A memorial service will be led by Pastor Dr. Robert Bohler, and former Pastor Dr. Walter Cook at Central Presbyterian Church, 380 Alps Road, Athens, at 2:00 pm Thursday, April 24, 2014. A reception will follow the service.
