Sanford Community - Mary Matthews Stone, age 93 of Sanford Community, Madison County passed away Sunday, January 4, 2015 at her home.
Mary Frances Matthews Stone was born September 24, 1921 to Miles Wilson Matthews and Annie Mae Crawford Matthews in the Center Community of Jackson County. Her life was dedicated to her family, her church, her community, and helping others through her work. She was predeceased by her husband A. L. Stone (Albert Leo Stone, Sr.). She was a member of Gordon's Chapel United Methodist Church from her marriage to her death. Survivors include three children and spouses: Gale Stone Brown and Brunelle L. Brown; Albert L. Stone, Jr and Anne Girvan Stone; and Miles Anthony Stone and Teresa Wood Stone; grandchildren and spouses: Leslie Anne Stone Barrineau and Jacob Charles Barrineau and Brian Anthony Stone and Kristen Gordon Stone and great grandchildren: Claire Anne Leuthner, Daniel Stone Leuthner, Reeves Alexander Barrineau, James Miles Barrineau, Evelyn Brinkley Stone, and Lorelai Leigh Stone. She is survived by a brother Bobby Sanford Matthews and wife, Barbara Kesler Matthews, one sister-in-law, Martha Nelms Matthews, and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceasing her were her brother, Dwight Moody Matthews and his wife Virginia Long Matthews; and brother Morton Wilson Matthews. The family recognizes three special friends and care givers: Patricia Hector,Angela Huff and Kenneth Wilson.
As a young lady in 1952 she started work with Michael Brothers, on Clayton Street, Athens, GA later Davisons later Macys and was a group manager in ladies ready to wear. After 25 years of service she retired in 1978 and joined her daughter at Brownstone's ladies ready to wear on Clayton Street in Athens, Georgia. Among her greatest loves were her husband, her family, cooking for others, and genealogy.
Funeral services will be 2 PM, Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Gordon's Chapel United Methodist Church, Nowhere Road, Sanford Community with the Rev. William Hall Jackson conducting the service. Visitation will be Tuesday,January 6, 2015 from 6-8 PM at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, Danielsville, Georgia.
