Mary L. (Spratlin) Smith

Mary Spratlin Nelms Smith, 80, wife of John A. Smith, died Monday, July 9, 2018. Born in Athens, she was the daughter of the late John D. Spratlin and Clara Dudley Spratlin. She was also preceded in death by her two sisters. Mary retired from General Times/Westclox after 25 years. In addition to her husband, survivors includer three children: Rita (Avery) Shadden of Watkinsville, Howell "Bill" (Elaine) Nelms, Jr. of Danielsville, Anthony (Beth Wall) Nelms of Buford; six grandchildren: Stephanie Carter, Stephen Shadden, Tabitha Nelms-Rivera, Cassy Nelms-Jennings, Evan Veale and Marion Hammes and twelve great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 2PM at Lord & Stephens East with Rev. Sheila Hunter officiating. Interment will follow at Athens Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Mary's Hospice. Lord & Stephens East is in charge of arrangements.
