Athens - Mary Roper Newton, 98, of Athens, Ga., passed away at her home on July 25, 2007.
She was a native of Anniston, Ala., but was a longtime resident of Atlanta before moving to Athens and Watkinsville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Carl Newton. Mrs. Newton had been active in Athens Christian Women's Club, St. Mary's Auxiliary, Classic City Garden Club, and United Methodist Women. She was a member of Phi Mu Sorority and an honorary member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. She was also a member of Athens First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her son, Joseph Alan Newton of Cumming; her daughter, Mary Newton Moon of Athens, and her daughter, Linda Newton Bryant of Watkinsville; grandchildren are: Terry Newton of Augusta, Chuck Newton of St. Louis, Scott Newton of Peachtree City, Kyle Newton of Lawrenceville, Casey Bruner of Athens, Ryan Bruner of Athens, Shohn Calvin of Athens, and Bart Bruner of Athens; there are fifteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, July 28, 2007, in the chapel at Lord and Stephens West with Rev. Bob Willis officiating. Interment will be at Floral Hills Cemetery in Atlanta.
The family will receive friends at Lord and Stephens West on Friday, July 27, 2007, from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Children's Home or Stonecroft Ministries.
