Athens - Mary Gilbert Mell, 72, died July 11, 2006 surrounded by her family.
Born December 2, 1933 in Rome, GA, Mrs. Mell was the daughter of the late Daisy Clements and Henry Tucker Gilbert, Jr. She lived in Athens for most of her life and was a 1950 graduate of Athens High School. She attended the University of Georgia where she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority.
Mrs. Mell was a member of the Heritage Garden Club, the Junior League of Athens, and the Roadrunners Travel Group. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Athens and for many years was active in numerous church activities.
Mary loved her family, friends and had a special love for gardening and bridge.
Survivors include her husband of fifty-four years, Carlton N. Mell, Jr.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kitty and David Lay of Athens, Laura and Steve Ackerley of Watkinsville, Fran and John Sullivan of Ila; brother, Henry Tucker Gilbert, III, and wife, Nancy, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Rusty Lay, Chip Lay, Ben Ackerley, Robby Ackerley, Meagan Sullivan, and Rachael Sullivan; niece, Emily Gilbert; nephew, Tucker Gilbert, IV; a number of cousins.
Funeral services will be Friday, July 14, 2006, at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church of Athens with Rev. Andrew Cooke and The Rev. Dr. Joe Berry officiating. Interment will be in Oconee Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:30 until 7:30PM at the residence.
Memorials may be made to the Loran Smith Cancer Center or the American Cancer Society.
