Mary Lynn (Moore) Kreuz

Mary Lynn Moore Kreuz, prominent educator, church and civic leader, died April 9, 2014.
She had resided in Athens for 52 years and was married to the late Dr. Sam S. Kreuz, Associate Professor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia. She served as an administrator and teacher in the Clarke County School District for 33 years and was a Charter Member, Sunday School teacher and Choir member at Milledge Avenue Baptist Church.
Mrs. Kreuz was Vocational Supervisor at Clarke Central High School for 11 years after teaching and serving as Department Head of Homemaking Education at the school for 14 years. She also served two years as Coordinator of Consumer and Homemaking Education at the Athens Vocational-Technical School. She had previously taught school in Arkansas, in Madison County and at Winterville before joining the Clarke Central faculty. She was named Athens/Clarke County Woman of the Year in Education in 1970, and retired from Clarke Central in 1983.
She was born in Holland, Texas where she attended public schools and was a graduate of Mary Hardin-Baylor University. Her first five professional years were spent in research at Texas A&M University. She completed her Masters in Home Economic Education at the University of Georgia where she also did additional post-graduate study in Vocational Administration and Supervision. She served as Supervising Teacher for the University of Georgia for 34 homemaking teachers from 1956-70. She also supervised trade and industrial teachers for the University.
Widely recognized in her field, she published several important works including a volume for prospective teachers of Home Economics and a handbook for Home Economics Teachers endorsed and published by the National Association of Vocational Home Ec Teachers. Her many publications and articles led to her participation as a presenter in numerous conferences and workshops across Georgia and throughout the nation. She was a popular speaker at state and national conventions and other professional meetings.
She was elected Chairman of the National Association of Vocational Home Economics Teachers, and served as president of the Georgia Association of Home Economics Teachers and also as president of the Georgia Vocational Association. In addition, she held membership in many other local, state, and national professional groups including the National Education Association, the Georgia Education Association, the Georgia Association of Educators, the Georgia and American Vocational Associations, the Georgia and National Associations of Home Economics Teachers, the state and national Associations of Local Administrators, the Georgia and Arkansas Associations of Future Homemakers of America, and the state and national Home Economics Associations.
She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Alpha Delta Kappa and served as president of both professional fraternities. She is a member of the Georgia and American Veterinary Medicine Association Auxiliaries, and served as faculty advisor for Alpha Psi fraternity and the student chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association at the University of Georgia.
Other honors received through the years included a state trophy presented for national leadership in Home Economics, and a Good Friend Award presented by the Clarke Central VICA Club. In addition to her church activities, she was always active in community affairs including the local Parent Teacher Associations and the Girl Scouts of America.
Survivors include nephews, Fred Disch, John Disch, and Bill Bowen; niece, Linda Christian; and great-niece, Bethany Lynn Bowen.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30PM on Friday, April 11, 2014 at Milledge Avenue Baptist Church with the Dr. Edward H. Bolen officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Milledge Avenue Baptist Church.
