Elaine Dickens, 70, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, July 14, 2022. Born December 4, 1951, Elaine was the daughter of the late Ray M. Long and Mary Ann Long. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Michael Long. Elaine was born and raised in Statham, GA, and graduated from Winder-Barrow High School in 1970 where she was voted wittiest by her classmates. Elaine continued to spread wit, laughter, and smiles throughout her lifetime. She has been a resident of Watkinsville, GA, since marrying her devoted husband of 46 years.
On November 14, 2019, Elaine was diagnosed with AL amyloidosis. She courageously fought with grace and positivity until her last breath. Not only was she an inspiration to all who knew and loved her, but she also inspired numerous medical professionals with her poetic smile and fierce determination. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to her loving and dedicated caregivers who effortlessly became a part of the family in the past 10 months.
Elaine was a dedicated employee of the Clarke County School District for 31 years. She spent 18 impactful years at Alps Road Elementary School, followed by 4 ardent years at the Clarke County School District Board of Education. She concluded her meaningful career at Whit Davis Elementary School. Elaine spent half of her career with Dr. Joan Humphries by her side. Together, they were a dynamic duo and they both passionately believed in the teachers, students, parents, and administrators. Elaine served as the state president of the GAEOP for several years and attended many national conferences. During Elaine’s career, she received the Howard B. Stroud Award honoring her excellence in the school district. Elaine’s encouragement was felt daily by all who knew her.
After retirement Elaine immersed herself in her family. She took on a caregiver role for her mother and her brother. She spent more time making special magical memories with her darling grandchildren. Her role as a mother, daughter, wife, sister, friend, and grandmother was an honor for her, and she always gave 110% to others. She was everyone's cheerleader and sprinkled sunshine and sparkle wherever she went.
Elaine would light up every room she entered. She exuded love and kindness. After working at Flowers Inc. during her early twenties, she became a floral enthusiast. She enjoyed creating beautiful arrangements for her friends and family. She had an amazing green thumb and cared for an abundance of plants in and around her home. Elaine never missed an opportunity to celebrate and bring people together. Her love for God was evident in her love for others. The world would surely be a better place with more individuals like Elaine in their lives.
