Mary Alice (Whitehead) Canning

Mary Alice Whitehead Canning, 89, of Athens, passed away Monday, June 6, 2016.
A lifelong resident of the area, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd Stephens Whitehead and Veona Burger Whitehead. Mrs. Canning was a longtime member of Town and County Garden Club and she attended Cornerstone Church. She owned and operated Peter Pan Child Development Center following her employment with Athens Regional Medical Center. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Canning was preceded in death by her husband, Harrell G. Canning Sr.; two sons, Joseph Canning and Robert Canning; and her brother, Coleman Whitehead.
Survivors include three children, Marilyn Canning Rose, Harrell G. Canning Jr., and William Russell Canning; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 10, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Lord and Stephens, East. Interment will follow at Oconee Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 until 2:00 pm.
