Martha Stephens Hicks, affectionately known as “Nan”, passed away December 29, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, James Wade Hicks.
Born April 18, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Buren and Bernice Payne Stephens and preceded in death by brothers, Melvin (Mary) Stephens, B.V. Stephens and Clayton Stephens; sisters, Pearline Morris, Laverne Hurt and Lillian Casey.
Martha was a graduate of Cornelia High School and studied bookkeeping at Athens Technical School. She was a member of Winterville First Baptist Church and the Marion Coile Sunday School Class.
Survivors include her daughter and son in law, Carol and Pete Bray; son and daughter in law, Michael and Susan Hicks; grandsons, Dwayne (Lindsey) Bray of Watkinsville and Brandon Hicks of Athens; great grandchildren, Gracie Lane Bray, Callie Underwood, Mollie McDaris and Thomas McDaris; Gracie Lane’s mom, Karen Bray and Brandon’s mom, Donna Hicks; brother, J.B. (Brenda) Stephens; sister in law, Mildred Stephens of Clarksville and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Lord and Stephens, EAST, Monday, January 3, 2022 beginning at 2:00 PM. Services will follow in the chapel at 3:00 PM with Rev. Matt Stephens and Dr. Phil Wages officiating. Interment will be in Winterville Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be Kerry Stephens, Chris Stephens, L.C. Hurt, Wendell Hurt, Stephen Casey and Adam Ramey.
Memorials may be made to Winterville First Baptist Church.
