Martha Ann “Mimi” Hinely Dewald was welcomed by her parents, Lionel and Violet Hinely, in Savannah, GA when she was born on January 26, 1933, and they welcomed her once again when she entered her eternal peace on December 31, 2024. Known for her twinkling blue eyes, broad smile and dimples, and her musical laughter, Martha will be remembered for her kindness, thoughtfulness, and ability to love. During her life, she loved as we all should, deeply, unabashedly, and unconditionally. She was a fierce defender of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, extended family, and a multitude of friends, many whom considered her a second mother. She wholeheartedly valued the greater good in the world, Georgia football, a hearty laugh, and a beautiful sunset at her beloved St. Simons Island. The only thing that can fill the void of the loss of Martha on this earth, is joy in the knowledge that she was welcomed and received by so many that left before her.
Martha is survived by her first husband and friend, Charles Stewart (Joann), and their four children, Cynthia Dillard (Doug), Lisa Hill (Jeff), Chris Stewart (Nancy), and Drake Stewart, and her adoring grandchildren, Jonathan Hill, Brandon Dillard (Erin), and Amanda and Drake Stewart and their mother, Gloria Ramirez, and T.J., Cody, and Miriah Williams. She will also be missed by her great-grandchildren Roland, Ryder, Reagan, and soon-to-be Rosalie, Dillard, as well as her beloved sister, Hazel Grace Carter, and many dear nieces and nephews, “adopted” children and friends.
Martha was proceeded in death by her precious grandson, Matthew Jeffrey Hill, and two sisters, Coralie Kelly and Miriam “Mib” Cook, as well as three loving husbands, Robert Mickler, Leonard Janofsky, and Charles Dewald.
There will be a celebration of Martha’s beautiful life on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home West, 1211 Jimmy Daniel Road, Watkinsville, GA 30677. Visitation is at 2 pm with the service following at 3 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Habitat for Humanity or to the The Carter Center.
