Martha Carter, age 94, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 20, 2021. Martha was the loving wife of 68 years to the late Carlton V. Carter. Born in the Sandy Cross community in Oglethorpe County, GA on April 10, 1927, she was the third of four children born to the late Earl Harris and Mattie Lee Pinson Harris.
A lifelong homemaker, she served her family and her community with love and devotion. She enjoyed cooking for her family and especially loved singing hymns at home and at church.
A devoted follower of Christ, she was a lifelong member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church, where she had served as a Sunday School teacher and a member of the choir. She attended faithfully as long as her health permitted. At the time of her death, she was the oldest surviving member of the church.
Survivors include her two sons and their wives, Randy and Leslie Carter and Bruce and Lisa Carter all of Winterville; two daughters and their husbands, Veronica and Tommy Fleming of Winterville and Elaine and Benny Allen of Bonaire; grandchildren Scott and Cris Fleming, Todd and Miranda Fleming, Gregory and Crystal Allen, Ashlee and Benjamin Lawhorn, Anna Carter, Brandon and Leanne Carter and Jesse and Maisie Carter; great-grandchildren Jarrett and Casey Fleming, Jordan and Jenna Fleming, Kyle and Maggie Starr, Carter, Lincoln, and Grant Allen, Jackson and Caroline Lawhorn, Wyatt, Rhett, Adelyn, and Gunner Carter; great-great-grandchildren, Tripp Fleming, Bentley and Berkley Starr; a brother, Charles P. Harris and host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Sandy Cross Baptist Church, Lexington-Carlton Rd., Lexington, GA at 1 PM on Wednesday, December 22 with her nephew, Rev. Dennis Nix, officiating. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the church.
