Athens, GA - Marjorie Brightwell, 93, passed away Saturday, December 6, 2008 in Athens, GA.
Born in Monticello, Georgia on August 18, 1915, she was a daughter of the late John Dozier and Fleeta Persons. She was a graduate of the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia. Mrs. Brightwell was retired from the Clarke County School System where she taught for 31 years at Chase Street and Gaines School Elementary Schools, where she has been Teacher of the Year on several occasions. She was a member of First Christian Church in Athens where she was a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. She was on the board and president of A. T. Brightwell Scholarships, Inc. in Maxeys, Georgia. She was also a member and chaplain of the Ladies Garden Club, Chaplain of Azalea District, member of "Friends"-State Botanical Garden and member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Mrs. Brightwell was preceded in death by her husband, Hurbert F. Brightwell of Maxeys, Georgia, where they had lived for 39 years.
She is survived by a son, Hurbert F. Brightwell, Jr. of Athens, a grandson, Hurbert (Trey) Brightwell, III of Newnan, a brother, J. D. Persons, Jr. of Asheboro, NC, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 11:00 AM at First Christian Church of Athens, Georgia. Revs. Patrick Chandler and Ray Austin will officiate. Interment will follow at 2:00 PM at Westview Cemetery, Monticello, Georgia.
