Marion Ellen Scott

April 20, 1926 — September 17, 2021

Bishop

Marion Scott died on September 17, 2021 in Athens, Georgia. She was 95 years old. Marion was born in the industrial city of Lawrence, MA. Her mother had immigrated there from Scotland as a very young girl, and her father’s family was from Newfoundland.

Like many immigrants then and now, her parents were hard working and entrepreneurial, operating a small store in their yard. Marion experienced working and responsibility firsthand at a very young age. As soon as she was tall enough to reach over the counter, she was given a job.

Her mother’s life story was particularly troubling, losing her father as a ten-year-old and having to leave school in the fifth grade to work in the Lawrence textile mills.

What Marion learned from her mother’s experiences is that everybody needs a hand once in a while, and she devoted her life to the service of God and others.  -She and her late husband, Lloyd, became Salvation Army officers and worked as equal partners in every assignment they received.

Marion was first and foremost a minister. She was also called upon to run a residence for single women in New York City, supervise a summer camp kitchen full of rambunctious teenaged workers, assist in the national missing persons department, and perform social work activities.

Marion was fearless, with a can-do spirit and a talent for helping others that she maintained throughout her life. In her eighties, as she became more physically limited, she still contributed to projects for others. She initiated and ran a Project Linus program, where women of the Salvation Army Clearwater, Florida Corps created hundreds of beautiful blankets to be given to children in trauma and in need.

It was with great sadness in her nineties that she felt she could no longer be of help. And yet on any given day, she could be found sitting for prolonged hours at her kitchen table with her caregivers, helping them solve a particular problem they had or just sharing a good laugh, the way she remembered her kitchen table talks with her mom.

Marion was predeceased by her husband of almost 60 years, Lloyd Scott, her brother, William E. Russell, and her sister, Lillian O’Connor.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda Scott and Sheila (Philip) Smith, and her son, James Scott; her adoring grandchildren, Frank Albright, Anthony Albright, Bryan (Kari) Smith, and Erika (Philip) Pascucci; and her great-grandchildren,  Liliany, Ruby and Estelle, Noah, Silas and Shay.

A memorial service is planned for Marion at the Salvation Army Corps in Old Orchard Beach, Maine on October 23, 2021.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your local Salvation Army. Please direct the gift to the Home League.
