Marie Nix Maxwell, 88, passed away in Dublin, GA on June 26, 2012. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 3PM in the chapel at Lord & Stephens East Funeral Home, 4355 Lexington Rd, Athens, GA. Interment will follow at Clarke Memorial Cemetery, Lexington, GA. Rev. Mark George will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.
Marie Maxwell was born in Sumner, GA on April 4, 1924. She was the daughter of the late William Sidney Nix and the late Jane Marie O'Banion Nix. She was the widow of the late Robert Caldwell Maxwell. Mrs. Maxwell had lived in Lexington most of her life, and moved to Dublin last year due to health needs.
Mrs. Maxwell is survived by two daughters: Jane Maxwell Wilson and Barbara Maxwell (Paul) Riddle; four grandchildren: Lisa Wilson (Jay) King, Jennifer Riddle (James) Geiger, Robert Brian (Mallory) Wilson, and John Paul Riddle; four great-grandchildren: Lillian Marie Geiger, Walker McClain Wilson, Robert Charles Geiger, and Olivia Rachael Wilson.
Mrs. Maxwell graduated from North Georgia College. Upon graduation, she taught first grade in Dalton, GA. Later she married Robert Maxwell and accompanied him to El Paso, Texas where he completed his active duty military service in 1946. They moved to Lexington, GA where they owned a grocery store and Maxwell's Inc., a food sales and distribution business. They worked together in this business for most of their lives. In addition, Mrs. Maxwell later became the Lunchroom Supervisor for the Oglethorpe County Schools for 29 years. She was a member of Lexington Presbyterian Church. She was involved in numerous historic and community projects including: Meson Academy Memorial Park, Veterans Memorial at the Courthouse, restoration of the Depot in Crawford and the Lexington Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Time Capsule marking 200th Anniversary of Oglethorpe County, and Shaking Rock Park. She was a member of the Lexington Woman's Club and served as president. She was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Historic Oglethorpe, and Red Hat Ladies. She especially enjoyed feeding the hummingbirds, which came in great numbers to her backyard, taking care of her flowers, and baking birthday cakes for all her family members. Marie will always be remembered for her love and kindness toward everyone.
