Margaret Pownall Crawford was born April 13, 1922 in Halifax, England and passed away Friday, July 21, 2017 in Athens, Georgia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William W. Pownall and Minne Gouland Pownall of Halifax, England and her late husband, Wallace Henry Torbert of Opelika, Alabama and her siblings, Winnie, Ida, Madeliene, Jack and William.
She is survived by her loving husband of fifty-six years, Henry Jackson Crawford Sr., three children, Wallace H. Torbert (Debbie), Helen Torbert Pinkard (Terry), Henry Jackson Crawford Jr. (Vanessa), eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She has many nieces, nephews and friends here and in Great Britain.
Margaret served in the British Red Cross and was one of the last service nurses with the Allied Troops during World War II. As a war bride, she came to America on the Queen Mary and obtained her American Citizenship at Ellis Island in New York City.
Margaret was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Opelika, Alabama, where she made many lifelong friends. After retiring as an Office Manager for Drs. Walker & Strother and Dr. Burney in Opelika, she volunteered her time as a Pink Lady at St. Mary's Hospital in Athens, Georgia.
Still active in her 90's, Margaret drove to the grocery store, bank, and Carol Bray's Beauty Shop, which was the highlight of her week. There she enjoyed visiting with her many friends.
Her family and her faith were very important to her. Her last days were spent surrounded by her family and friends. We wish to thank Homestead Hospice, her compassionate nurse Patsy Cruce, Drs. Haver and Shiver, and her loyal caregiver, Barbara Kasper.
With her grace and beauty of spirit, she touched many lives and will forever be missed.
