High Shoals, GA- Maelee S. Smith , 79, died in the early morning of February 1, 2007, at Family Life Enrichment Center from a long period of declining health due to complications from Lupus and Diabetes.
She was born Nov. 20, 1927, Danielsville, Bond Community, Madison County, GA. She worked for many years at Elberton Manufacturing Co. in Elberton, GA, while raising her children. In her early 40's, she went back to school and became a LPN. She worked at Athens General, Heardmont Nursing Home, Elbert Co., and retired from Family Life Enrichment Center. One of her greatest joys was taking care of her Great-Granddaughter after her retirement. Daughter of the late Bertie Mae (Long) and Lee R. Scarboro of the Bond Community, Madison Co. She will be lovingly missed and remembered by her family and friends.
She is survived by children, Mary G. Jones (Jarrell) Hull, GA and Richard S. Gaines, III (Vicki), Woodstock, GA; three sisters, Louise Sexton, Betty Pruitt, and Juanita Gordon, all of Danielsville, GA; and former husband Richard S. Gaines, Jr., Athens, GA; grandchildren, Chris Herring (Rhonda) and Pam Goodman (Joe), Watkinsville, GA; Thomas Gaines (Courtney) Cumming, GA; Heather Kolodin (Adam) and Richard "Richie" S. Gaines IV, Canton, GA; great- grandchildren, Jimmy Davis, Kaitlyn Goodman, Andrew and Brett Herring, Watkinsville, GA; Alexis and Peyton Gaines, Cumming, GA.
Memorial services will be Sunday, February 4, 2007 at 3:00 PM at the chapel of Lord and Stephens, Danielsville. The family will receive friends Sunday, February 4 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. The family is at the home of Mary and Jarrell Jones in Hull, GA. Memorials may be made to the Diabetic Association in her name.
