Athens - Madison Henry Briscoe, 81, of Athens GA, died peacefully at home with his family on Wednesday, April 26, 2006. Mr. Briscoe was an inventor, and held five patents. He was owner of Circular Banding Co., Inc., a textile business which he operated for 50 years.
Mr. Briscoe was a native Athenian, the son of John C. Briscoe, Sr., and Tina Cook Briscoe. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, John C. Briscoe, Jr., Mary Ella Cooper, Anita Rose Zoner, and Allen H. Briscoe, Sr.
He graduated from Athens High School in 1941. He was in the last horse cavalry class of the ROTC at the University of Georgia. After his first two years at the University of Georgia, he volunteered and served in Europe during World War II, in Company "B" of the 1264th Engineer Combat Battalion. In 1950, he received a BS in Physics from the University of Georgia. He had attended the University of Dayton in Ohio and Oxford University in England while he was in the Army.
Mr. Briscoe became a member of the Church of Christ in his teens. He helped organize the Republican Party in Clarke County in the early 1960s.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jeanne Kent Briscoe, sons Duke P. Briscoe and Barry K. Briscoe, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Private graveside services were held Saturday, April 29, at Oconee Hill Cemetery, section E with Rev. Buford Lockman officiating.
