Athens, GA - Loran V. Appleby, aged 84, passed away in Athens on June 17, 2011.
A native of Glenville, NY, he was born on April 4, 1927 to George W. and Nellie Ray Appleby. In 1939, he competed in and won the annual Soapbox Derby held in Akron, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. After his service, he attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Rensselaer, NY and received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1950. He worked for R. D. Marshall, Inc. and later established L.V. Appleby, Inc. in 1957 in Albany, NY, Syracuse, NY and Burlington, VT.
During his career, he was active in the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), a professional organization. He was a member of the board of directors and served as national secretary. IIn 1969, he established another business venture in Lake George NY. Colony Cove Cottages was a summer resort in Lake George, NY.
He was preceded in death by his wife, of 61 years, Esther (Van Auken) in 2008 and is survived by son Charles and his wife Marilyn and their children Michael and wife Erin with great-grandchildren Jack and Frankie; Lauren Appleby Gay and husband Chris, Lesley Appleby and husband Matthew Verser; son Arthur and his wife Catherine and their children Gwen Appleby and Christopher Appleby; and many nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends.
Visiting hours from 2 pm to 3 pm with memorial service following at Lord and Stephens, WEST on Wed., June 22. Visitation at Emerick Funeral Home, Clifton Park, NY on Sun., June 26 from 3 pm to 6 pm with Masonic service at 5 p.m.. Memorial service to be held on Mon., June 27 at 11 am with burial at Albany Rural Cemetery.
