Lloyd Gilbert Sawhill, 93, died April 5, 2018 in Athens, GA after a short illness. A gathering for family and friends will be held Sunday, April 22 from 2:00-4:00 pm at Lord & Stephens West Funeral Home, 1211 Jimmy Daniel Road, Watkinsville, GA 30677. www.lordandstephens.com
Lloyd was born to George W. and Alta M. Sawhill on August 26, 1924 in Podunk Center, Iowa. The birth certificate reads "Near the Village" of Barney, IA because Podunk had not yet incorporated. The family later moved to Flint, Michigan to work in the auto industry, but Lloyd would return to Iowa for the summers to work on the family farm. In 1943 he married Isabel Lynch in Flint, Michigan and moved to Iowa to farm. After the war, they returned to Michigan where Lloyd became a skilled sheet metal worker. He graduated from the Norman Rockwell Famous Artists School in 1962 and pursued his love of horses through canvas, photography and sculpture. He and Isabel traveled the country attending horse shows, races and training grounds where Lloyd would capture the beauty of the horses for their owners. In 1996, they moved to Athens, GA, where Lloyd continued to draw, paint and sculpt. Perhaps even more than he loved to paint, Lloyd loved to tell stories, and he continued to do so for anyone who would listen up until his final illness.
Lloyd is preceded in death by his wife Isabel, his sister Martha Everett, and his brother Eugene W. Sawhill. He is survived by his sister, Doris Johannessen of Eugene, Oregon; his nephews: Malcolm Wood, Bernard Wood, Dean Wood, Bruce Johannessen, Ronald Sawhill, Steven Sawhill, and Roger Sawhill; and his nieces, Nancy Hankins and Brenda Charles.
