Liston Nathaniel Drury passed away on November 20, 2013 at the age of 89 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born on Sunday, October 5, 1924 to Liston and Irene Drury in Jacksonville, Florida. He was raised by his grandparents in Camden County, Georgia where he graduated from high school in 1942 and entered the US Navy that same summer. Mr. Drury spent WWII in the blimp division patrolling the coast of Georgia searching for German submarines. After the war, Liston attended ABAC and then transferred to the University of Georgia where he received a BS in Agricultural Engineering in 1949. He worked as an electrification advisor in Live Oak, FL and Quincy, FL. After getting married and starting a family, he joined the faculty at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The family moved to Athens in 1955 where Mr. Drury received a Master's Degree in Agricultural Engineering from UGA. He continued post-graduate work at Iowa State University. Mr. Drury spent some time as an adjunct professor in the College of Agriculture at the University of Georgia. He was most proud of his research while at the USDA Southeast Poultry Research Lab in Athens. After retiring in 1983, Mr. Drury owned and operated Drury's Christmas Tree Farm in Winterville for over twenty years.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Drew Drury, son Dr. Steve (Laura) Drury of Denver, CO, daughter Colleen Drury Jenkins of Winder, GA, and granddaughter Shannon (Don) Hammond also of Winder. Liston joined Winterville First Baptist Church in 1959 and over the years served as a Sunday school teacher, RA leader, church clerk and Deacon. He was a life member of the Winterville Civitan Club where he especially enjoyed serving on the scholarship committee. He was a 62 year member of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.
A memorial service will be held for Mr. Drury on Friday, November 22, 2013 at 2pm at Lord & Stephens East in Athens, Georgia. Donations may be made in his memory to the Winterville Civitan Club.
